PSYCHOMETRIC ASSESSMENT

A time for mutual understanding

My Process for a Child Psychological Assessment

A psychological assessment is an essential time of evaluation and reflection to better understand how a child functions, cognitively, emotionally, socially, and behaviourally. It helps shed light on difficulties, develop diagnostic hypotheses (neurodevelopmental disorders, learning difficulties, etc.), and propose concrete recommendations for support.

The First Appointment (before the assessment)

Before starting a full assessment, I always suggest an initial 45–60 minute meeting with parents (or legal guardians). The fee is €80.

This meeting allows us to:

  • review the difficulties observed,

  • discuss expectations,

  • evaluate whether a psychological assessment is appropriate,

  • and confirm that the assessment falls within my area of competence as a psychologist.

At the end of this meeting, several directions are possible:
➡️ parental guidance,
➡️ therapeutic follow-up,
➡️ or a full psychological assessment, depending on the needs identified.

The Steps of a Psychological Assessment

If a full assessment is recommended, it unfolds in several stages, each designed to collect the most precise and useful information to understand the child’s overall functioning. The fee for the complete assessment is €930 and continues until we have found meaningful answers to your child’s situation. In general, the process includes:

1. Background Interview (1h to 1h30)

Conducted with parents, this step retraces the child’s history (perinatal period, early development, significant life events, schooling, social relationships, health, etc.).
We explore all areas of development: motor, cognitive, emotional, language, sensory, and more.
This stage is essential to set the context and build the foundation for the evaluation.

2. Test Administration and Questionnaires (4h to 8h)

During one or more sessions, the child completes different standardized psychometric tests and/or questionnaires, chosen according to the concerns identified in the background interview.
These tools help evaluate cognitive, attentional, emotional, and adaptive functioning.

A full list of the tools I use appears at the end of this section.

3. Additional Parent Interviews (1h to 2h)

A follow-up meeting with parents helps to:

  • confirm that all relevant information has been gathered,

  • discuss any new elements,

  • and explore certain areas in greater depth if needed.

4. Consultation with Teachers and Other Professionals (1h to 2h)

With parental consent, I also contact the child’s teacher to gather insight into:

  • classroom behaviour,

  • relationships with peers and adults,

  • learning abilities and possible academic challenges.

This collaboration with the school is valuable in developing realistic recommendations.
I also work with other professionals involved (therapist, speech therapist, physician, etc.), whose observations and analyses are always highly valuable.

5. Analysis and Report Writing (4h to 6h)

Once all the data is collected, I prepare a detailed written report that includes:

  • results of tests and questionnaires,

  • an overview of the child’s global functioning,

  • diagnostic hypotheses if needed,

  • and tailored recommendations (support, therapies, school accommodations, etc.).

6. Parent Feedback Session (1h to 1.5h)

A dedicated meeting with parents to present the results in detail, answer questions, and discuss follow-up options.

7. Child Feedback Session (30 min to 1h)

Because the results belong to the child as well, I organise a feedback session in age-appropriate language.
This helps the child better understand themselves, recognise their strengths, and view their challenges without judgment.

8. Meeting with the School (1h)

If parents wish, I gladly participate in meetings with the teaching team, sharing relevant information (always within the limits of professional confidentiality) to help implement educational adjustments that best support the child’s development at school.
